In 2012, she attended the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (USA) as a recipient of the competitive Annual Fund Scholarship. She was conferred a Master of Public Health in Maternal and Child Health and obtained a Graduate Certificate in Global Health in 2014.
Professionally, Yan Xin holds a full registration under the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC), Singapore. She is also a Pediatric Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT) certified therapist and is qualified in administering the School Version of the Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (School AMPS). Her professional affiliations include memberships of the Singapore Association of Occupational Therapists and the Composers and Authors Society of Singapore.
As a pediatric occupational therapist, Yan Xin helps children to maximize their potential in self-care, play and school performance. She has worked extensively with families and children with special needs in diverse settings. Yan Xin began her career at KK Women’s & Children’s Hospital where she had the opportunity to work alongside a multidisciplinary team of developmental pediatricians and allied healthcare professionals. She then joined one of the largest and most established private therapy centers in Singapore. One of her professional achievements was to venture out of conventional clinical settings to spearhead developmental screening and occupational therapy services in mainstream international schools. Yan Xin was also part of a pioneer team involved in starting up the child developmental center at another private practice. Besides providing one-to-one intervention and group therapy programs in the clinic, Yan Xin has also provided school-based intervention within mainstream schools in Singapore and Adelaide, as well as special-needs institutions in Singapore. Additionally, Yan Xin has also presented talks at public forums to increase parents’ awareness of developmental milestones of children.
Committed to giving back to the wider community, Yan Xin has collaborated with a Cambodian non-governmental organization to help develop health systems for provision of early childhood interventions. Her global health stint has taught her to work creatively in resource-limited areas and she remains deeply touched by the warm hospitality of her Khmer colleagues.
Owing to a keen interest in animal-assisted therapy, Yan Xin now spends her Friday mornings side-walking with the young riders and beautiful horses at the Riding for the Disabled Association of Singapore.
